I heart you, first draft

How a first draft is like an infatuation:

  • I'm happiest when I'm with it.
  • I daydream about it when we're not together.
  • I feel jealous of time spent on anything else.
  • It's handsome, intelligent and witty.
  • When I catch glimpses of its flaws, I rationalize them.
  • What few problems it has, I know I can fix.
  • I feel giddy when I talk about it.
  • I'm wretched and pouty when we don't get along.
  • I want everyone else to love it as much as I do (and I assume they will).
  • I'm certain this is the one.
  • I imagine our future together: cover art, book signings, the series.

I'll know it's true love if my heart still races during the twelfth rewrite.

You've described it to a tee! (Will my parents like it when I bring it home for dinner?)

LOL, it's just like young love. I feel giddy about my wip. Need to keep the momentum going, but it's playing hard to get right now! ;)

12th rewrite. That's funny and true.

This is brilliant (hilarious picture!). My NaNo novel is going through a series of ups and downs (currently a down) and a twelfth rewrite is looking very, very far away indeed...

Awwww! I love that analogy. Great post.

Thanks for stopping by, bloggy pals. (B--I had one of those down days myself; not feeling very infatuated at the moment!)

I love this. I am absolutely in this place right now with my own first draft. Really had to laugh.

This was hilarious but pretty much the way I feel when it's going well....when it's not--we're talking break-up!

Oh, this is so awesome! First drafts are like romances, aren't they? Some of mine (the drafts, I mean) are all about infatuation, hearts, and butterflies, but others. . . Well, not so much.

Haha, fabulous! And so true, really.

Oh, sigh, I'm ready to romance another manuscript, but I haven't dated the plot.
